Leon County Supervisor of Elections Announces Post-Election Activities for 2026 Primary Election, Including Potential Recounts
Leon County, FL – Mark S. Earley, Supervisor of Elections for Leon County, announces post-Election Day activities for the 2026 Primary Election. “Although Election Day has passed, the Primary Election is not yet over,” said Supervisor Earley. “Preliminary results have been available since election night, but there are still several steps along the road before we have the final official election results for the Primary Election, including a possible recount.”
Election Results
Voters can view preliminary election results by visiting LeonVotes.gov and clicking on the ‘Results’ button. The preliminary results include nearly every ballot cast in the election. However, a small number of provisional ballots and Vote-by-Mail ballots with signature issues still need to be reviewed.
On Friday, August 21, the Leon County Canvassing Board will submit the first set of unofficial results to the Florida Department of State. These will include the remaining eligible Vote-by-Mail and provisional ballots. The first set of unofficial results will be used to determine if a machine recount is triggered.
Potential Recounts
The current preliminary election night results in the City Commission, Seat 3 race are extremely close and may trigger a recount under Florida law. All recount activity will take place at the Leon County Elections Center at 2990-1 Apalachee Parkway. The recount is overseen by the Leon County Canvassing Board, comprised of the Supervisor of Elections, a Leon County Judge, and a member of the Board of County Commissioners. Observation of the recount is open to candidates, media, and the general public.
If the first set of unofficial results show that a race was decided or a candidate eliminated by a margin of one half of one percent or less, the Leon County Canvassing Board will order a machine recount in that race. During the machine recount, the Elections Office will put each ballot back through the voting equipment to make sure that all ballots and votes were counted accurately. The results of the machine recount are recorded as the second set of unofficial results.
If the results of the machine recount show that that a race was decided by one quarter of one percent or less, the Canvasing Board moves on to a manual recount. In the manual recount, the Board individually reviews every single ballot where the voting machines found either no votes or too many votes in the recounted race. This makes certain that even poorly marked votes are counted and that no voter intent has been missed. The outcome of the manual recount becomes part of the official results. The results will be finalized when the Canvassing Board certifies the official election results on August 25.
