College Student Voters

If you are living in Tallahassee to attend a college or university, please double check your voter registration today! The deadline to register to vote in Florida is October 5. We strongly encourage student voters to consider Early Voting as a convenient way of voting here in Leon County. Both FAMU and FSU have Early Voting sites on campus at the Student Union. View dates and times on our Early Voting page. 

Campus Voting

Both FAMU and FSU have Early and Election Day voting sites on campus. But campus voting changes on Election Day. 

During the Early Voting period, all students registered to vote in Leon County can vote on campus. That is why all students registered in Leon County should consider voting at the campus Early Voting sites before election day.  

On Election Day, state law requires voters to vote in their neighborhood polling place. So, if you try to vote on campus on Election Day, then it is very likely you will be in the wrong place and you will not be able to vote there. For most students, your neighborhood polling place is not on campus, but nearer to your home. See the maps below for details on who can vote on campus on Election Day.

Vote in Leon County or "Back Home"?

In Florida, you must vote in the county in which you are registered. But you have options!

If you want the convenience of voting on campus or near your student home in Leon County, you can register to vote here, even if you still use your parent's address for other documents or pay out-of-state tuition. Or you can register to vote back home.

Register in Leon County

As long as you live in Leon County, you can register to vote here, even if you still use your home address for other documents or pay out-of-state tuition. You can then vote in-person here or request a Vote-by-Mail ballot from our office. In addition to federal and state races, your ballot will include local races for Leon County.

If you live on campus, you may use either the street address or the name of your dormitory or residence hall as the address where you live. You can also use your campus mail center address as your residence if you live on campus. You can use your campus mailbox or another address as your mailing address.

Register in your Home County

If you moved to Leon County for school but still have a residence in your home county, you can register in your home county or keep your current registration there. Unless you travel home to vote in person, you will most likely be limited to voting by mail. In addition to federal and state races, your ballot will include local races for your home county. Use your home county address as your residential address and your Leon County address as your mailing address to receive your mail ballot.

How Do I Register?

If you are a Florida Resident, visit RegisterToVoteFlorida.gov to register to vote or to update your registration. You can also visit our Voter Registration page for additional ways to register to vote, or visit our Update Voter Registration page for additional ways to update your existing Florida voter registration.

When you use RegisterToVoteFlorida.gov to register, the online system will ask you to enter your residence address using a lookup tool. If you cannot find your address using the lookup tool, click on the “address not found” button and enter your address manually. Our staff will then review your application and can clean up any address issues.

If you are not a Florida resident and you are registered to vote out of state, contact your home state’s elections office for information on registration and voting.

Register to Vote Online

Change Address

Students move frequently, and that can cause confusion and lines when you go to vote.   
If you are already registered to vote in Florida, changing your address is easy and there is no deadline. You can update your registration into Leon County at any time, up to and including Election Day at the polls.

But don't wait! Avoid the lines at the polls - update your address before you go to vote using this link or by calling 850-606-8683.

If you wait to update your address at the polls, you will most likely have to wait in a long line. Additionally, on Election Day you will need to be at the correct polling place for your new address in order to cast a ballot. Update your address now!

Check to See if I'm Registered

Visit RegisterToVoteFlorida.gov and click "Am I Already Registered?" If you are not registered or if the information is outdated, you can use that website to register to vote or update your voter information.

We will mail you a voter information card. If you do not receive the card within two weeks, contact us to make sure we have your correct information.

How Do I Vote?

Your voting options depend on if you are a Leon County resident or if you are a resident or another location. 

Leon County Resident

If you are registered to vote in Leon County, you have three ways to vote:

  • Early Voting - Early Voting is available before each election. There are 10 Early Voting sites in Leon County, including the FAMU and FSU Student Unions. Visit our Early Voting page for further information. All registered Leon County voters can vote at any Early Voting site in Leon County, so we strongly recommend that student voters consider Early Voting as a convenient option. 
  • Voting at the polls on Election Day - On Election Day you must vote at your neighborhood polling place. You can only vote at the campus voting location if it is your assigned polling place. Your polling place is printed on our your voter information card or you can check it online. The maps at the top of this page show where you must live in order to vote on campus on Election Day.   • Voting-by-Mail - Visit our Vote-by-Mail page for information on how to request and return your Leon County Vote-by-Mail ballot.

 

Resident of Another County or State

If you are registered in another county or state, contact your home county's elections office and request a Vote-By-Mail ballot be mailed to your mailing address in Leon County. After you complete your ballot, you must return it to your home county's elections office. Alternatively, you can vote in-person in your home county, but you will need to travel there.
