Audits

Leon County is nationally recognized as a leader in the field of post-election audits. We've led the way by developing powerful new tools that provide the highest levels of accuracy and unparalleled transparency into election results.

We were the first county in the nation to perform 100% post-election re-tabulation audits as part of every election to ensure that election results are accurate. In fact, Leon County was instrumental in the early ground-breaking developmental work for these 100% post-election audits.

In 2016 we were the first county to put our official 100% post-election audit results online as Comparison of Votes Cast reports. And in 2020, in partnership with the Florida State University Election Law Center and the LeRoy Collins Institute, we were the first to present individual ballot images paired with their corresponding vote tabulations, as well as aggregated result comparisons. With these resources, you can perform your own audit of the election to confirm that the results are accurate.

We encourage you to explore the resources on this page to learn more about election audits and see for yourself how our election processes are secure, transparent, and worthy of your trust.

Audit Overview

After every election, we audit the election results. In most Florida counties, the audit examines a sample of ballots. Here in Leon County, we pioneered a process using a second certified system to perform a 100% audit of every election. We double check every vote, on every ballot, from every voter to make sure that the results are 100% accurate. Essentially, we perform a 100% recount of every election using a completely separate system to make certain that every paper ballot has been counted accurately. Over the course of hundreds of races in Leon County, the auditing system has confirmed the results of each election. The audit is open to the public and overseen by the Leon County Canvassing Board.

Florida Post-Election Audit Project

As part of our commitment to transparency, we have made the scanned ballot images from the audit available to the public through the Florida Post-Election Audit Project.

The Leon County Supervisor of Elections Office is proud to be a founding partner with Florida State University's Election Law Center and the LeRoy Collins institute to offer this important innovation in election transparency.

Ballot Verifier

You can use our Ballot Verifier website to easily view audit results and ballot images. Using this site, you can view every ballot and vote in Leon County presidential general elections since 2020.

We created the Ballot Verifier website as a pilot project to leverage the power of technology to improve transparency in our elections. Our goal is to consolidate into one searchable platform every candidate contest and ballot question from the year 2020 forward.

You can use this database to easily access, explore, and analyze ballot images and the corresponding vote tabulation and election results. This allows you to independently verify and confirm the results of our elections.

The data and images in the site come from the official post-election audits. We maintain the site through a partnership between our office and Civera. We will continue working to load additional elections into the Ballot Verifier website as time and funding permits. This requires a process of ongoing data inventory and extraction among a variety of official primary sources and compilations.

You can use the ballot verifier website to look at actual ballot images, side-by-side with the votes recorded from that ballot. Simply select an election from the drop down box, or type the name of a candidate or ballot question into the search box. This website will then display the audit results for that contest and associated ballot images. You can then verify the results by looking at the actual ballot images.

At the Leon County Supervisor of Elections Office, we are committed to the highest levels of election integrity and transparency. Ballot Verifier helps us achieve that mission by providing you with easy access to images of the actual ballots, along with the votes recorded from that ballot. Using this site, you can confirm for yourself the accuracy of our post-election audit results.

Visit our Election Integrity page to learn more about the many safeguards in place to ensure that our election results are accurate.

Florida law protects each voter’s right to a secret ballot. To ensure voter secrecy, some ballots and the selections made in precincts and races with fewer than 30 voters have been hidden from view (s. 98.0981(3)(a)(1), F.S.). In addition, any marks on ballots potentially containing personally identifying information have been replaced with asterisks (***).

Audit Observation

Election audits are open to the public. Ballots are scanned into the audit system daily after they are counted. You can observe this scanning process as it takes place throughout the election. You can also attend meetings of the Leon County Canvassing Board, which is responsible for overseeing the audit.
