Leon County Supervisor of Elections
This page has information on where political campaigns can place signs, and how signs can be recycled after an election.
Both the City of Tallahassee and Leon County have enacted sign codes. The sign codes applies to signs placed by and for candidates, campaigns, and political parties. The City of Tallahassee Sign Code applies within City limits, while the Leon County code applies outside of city limits.
State law also limits sign placement in the right-of-way of any state or national highway. The Florida Highway Patrol has additional information regarding the unauthorized use of the public right-of-way.
All candidates must make a good faith effort to remove their political campaign advertisements within 30 days after the candidate withdraws, is defeated, or elected to office. If political campaign advertisements are not removed within the specified period, a political subdivision or governmental entity has the authority to remove them and may charge the candidate the actual cost for such removal. For additional information, please see Section 106.1435, Florida Statutes.
The Elections Office has only limited authority regarding campaign signs. Florida law prohibits solicitation, including the placement of campaign signs, within 150 feet of an Early Voting site, Election Day polling place, or Secure Ballot Intake Station, when voting is occurring. Election workers will remove campaign signs from the no-solicitation zone.
The Elections Office does not have the authority to remove signs outside the no-solicitation zone. If you have a complaint regarding the placement of a campaign sign outside the no-solicitation zone, please contact the City of Tallahassee or Leon County code enforcement office.
The Elections office has partnered with Leon County Government, Marpan Recycling, and the League of Women Voters of Tallahassee to facilitate the recycling of old campaign signs. Large recycling bins are stationed throughout Leon County in the weeks after each election to allow campaigns and voters easily recycle campaign signs. This helps to beautify our community as well as recycle the signs and wire stands into usable materials.
You can recycle plastic campaign signs as well as the metal wire stands. Please separate the sign from the stand before placing both parts into the designed recycling bin.
Sign recycling bins will be available at each Leon County Branch Library as well as several other locations throughout Leon County after each election. The recycling bins are located in the parking lot of each facility, allowing for easy unloading of signs from your vehicle into the bin.
The bins will be available after each election here in Leon County. Specific dates for the 2026 Election Cycle will be posted here once available.
If you have questions about the campaign sign recycling program please contact Leon County's Office of Resource Stewardship at Sustainability@LeonCountyFL.gov.
